Saint Barnabas

Anglican Church

Parish of Roseneath and Oriental Bay, Wellington

Open hearted, open handed, open minded

Inside St Barnabas Church Roseneath Wellington

We’re a small but vibrant church in Wellington’s suburb of Roseneath and one of the few Anglo-Catholic churches in New Zealand.

We value the catholic traditions of the Church as they draw us into the mystery of worship and the wonder of God’s love.

The celebration of Mass is central to our parish life, we use the liturgy of the New Zealand Prayer Book, and our church is filled with joyful congregational singing led by a small choir. The setting for our Mass was specially written by the well known musician Mark W Dorrell.

We're proud to be an affirming church and part of the Diverse Church network, a community of Rainbow Christians across New Zealand. This network aims to see local churches become safer places where LGBT+ people can fully participate. At St Barnabas we welcome LGBT+ people to worship and to participate in all aspects of our community life and leadership.

Our vicar

Reverend Cath Growcott

Reverend Cath Growcott

Rev Cath became our vicar at St Barnabas in September 2019. Cath loves being part of the hospitable community at St Barnabas and using her skills to enhance our open hearted, open handed and open minded presence in the wider community of Roseneath and beyond.

Originally an engineer, she completed her BTheol from Otago University by distance learning while raising her family. The Growcott family (David, Cath, Alex, Henry and Oli) moved to Auckland in 2011 while Cath undertook further training at St John's Theological College. Cath was ordained deacon in 2011 and priest the following year when the family returned to Wellington. Cath was appointed curate at St Luke's, Wadestown, then priest-in-charge at St Anne's, Porirua, before becoming our vicar. She’s also a hospital chaplain and completed an internship as a mental health chaplain at Porirua in 2018. She currently does some hours as chaplain at ABI Rehabilitation, an inpatient unit for clients with acquired brain injuries.
